Marilyn Monroe's eternity ring
"Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" she sang in 1953. It was Yankee legend Joe DiMaggio who managed to snare the world's most coveted woman. On 14 January 1954, he married Marilyn Monroe and gave her an eternity ring, the symbol of eternal love. DiMaggio had listened carefully to Marilyn's song, as the ring contained no less than 35 diamonds. With this, the couple immediately catapulted the eternity ring into popular trend, making the piece of jewellery still totally hip today.
Kate Middleton's blue sapphire
Prince William asked Kate Middleton to marry him with Princess Diana's engagement ring, an oval blue sapphire with diamonds. With the jewel, the prince wanted to honour his late mother, keep the memories of her alive and send a symbolic message to his future wife. Talk about a timeless or historic engagement ring!
Queen Elisabeth II's elegant solitaire
When we search further for beautiful jewellery in the British royal house, we automatically end up with the ring of The Queen herself. When Prince Philip wanted to propose to Elisabeth in 1947, he knew that the future queen of England needed a unique design. So he had a ring designed from a tiara, a family heirloom from his mother. The result was an elegant solitaire 3-carat gold diamond finished with additional diamonds along the side of the engagement ring.
Meghan Markle's trilogy
While we are talking about the engagement rings of British Royals, we immediately think of the most recent royal wedding that is still fresh in our minds: the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. The trilogy was carefully curated by the prince himself. Harry chose a diamond from Botswana, where the couple spent a holiday together just before their engagement. He had the ring finished with diamonds from his late mother Diana, which gave the gem extra symbolic value.
Beyoncé's emerald
Time for another queen: Mrs R&B, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter. When rapper Jay-Z wanted to propose to his princess, he spared no expense and went in search of top quality. Only the best for Queen B. ! Today, the star walks around with an 18-carat emerald diamond valued at a whopping US$5.5 million. Lorraine Schwartz, Beyoncé's regular jeweller, designed the piece. The couple celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary in April 2018.
The cushion of Kim Kardashian
Last but not least, the queen of Instagram, selfies and the internet: Kim Kardashian-West. Kanye West also turned to Lorraine Schwartz in 2013 to design an Instaproof piece for his expectant. This collaboration resulted in a stunning 20-carat cushion diamond ring that almost looks like ice because it is so pure. The $4.5 million engagement ring was stolen in October 2016 during an armed robbery in Paris. The couple is still happily married four years later.
