What is a wedding suite?
The wedding suite or marriage suite, also known as the wedding procession, consists of the closest family and/or friends of the bride and groom. These people are usually by their side throughout the wedding day and often attend both the civil and the church or ceremonial wedding. The suite may be assigned certain tasks or roles to support the bride and groom during their wedding day.
Who belongs to the suite?
According to tradition
Traditionally, the wedding suite has a fixed composition consisting of the bride and groom, their witnesses, bridesmaids and groomsmen, bridesmaids' children and the brides' children's godparents. According to tradition, this group has clearly divided roles and is responsible for the successful conduct of the ceremony, the party and the practical matters surrounding the wedding. A pretty important group, in other words!
Today
These days, the composition of the wedding suite is a lot more flexible. The most important thing is that you involve the people who mean the most to you as a couple. Apart from the people mentioned above, your parents, brothers, sisters, grandparents, cousins and other close relatives can also be part of the wedding suite. This can also include close friends who are not bridesmaids or groomsmen.
So you and your partner choose entirely who belongs to this group; there is no general 'one-size-fits-all' rule. Involve the people you would like to be close to on your wedding day, to celebrate this special moment with them. The suite can be as big or as small as you like. Just know that a larger suite can lead to less personal contact with each suit member.
The role of the wedding suite
Compared to the past, the strict roles within the wedding suite have faded; again, there is now more room for personalisation. For example, you can involve your suite in the preparations, such as organising your bachelorette party, and in special moments on the wedding day, such as getting ready, exchanging vows, as a speaker during your ceremony, ... One thing is certain; they will be by your side the whole day!
In short, it's all up to you! The composition of the suite and their roles vary from couple to couple. So do not look at what other couples do, but discuss together with whom you want to experience this beautiful day.
