Make sure your skin is well prepared
A few months before the big day, your skincare routine can kick into high gear. Moisturising is very important. Cleanse your skin morning and night and use a moisturiser and eye cream. Once a week, you can also apply a moisturising mask. Make-up lasts longer on well-cleansed, moisturised skin.
The must: sun cream
To prevent your nose or décolleté from getting sunburnt after just a few hours, the last step in your skincare routine is to use sun cream every day. Note that some sun creams can cause 'flashback' if you take flash photos (usually indoors in the evening). Your face and neck may appear paler than your arms, for example. So it's best to use a sun protection factor (SPF) of no more than 25 or 30, with a fine, liquid texture, like ISDIN Waterdrops or Supergoop! Glow Screen.
Essential: the primer
Do you have shiny skin? Then use a mattifying primer like Smashbox Anti-Shine or Make Up Forever Shine Control. The primer is used after cleansing and caring for the skin, and first and foremost when applying make-up. There are primers on the market for every skin type and every need: as well as mattifying primers, there are primers that fill pores, add radiance or correct colour. Use a face primer and an eye primer to prolong the life of your make-up, and only use a thin layer each time.
Several thin coats are better than one thick coat
It's better to apply several thin coats than one thick one. This will not only give you a more beautiful effect, but also make your make-up last longer. Blend your foundation and concealer well using a damp brush or beautyblender.
Water-resistant make-up
You probably already knew that mascara and eye pencil need to be waterproof for your best day, but there are other products on the market that are waterproof and/or very long-lasting, like Daniel Sandler's Aquarelle Liquids (blush and highlighter) or Danessa Myricks' Yummy Skin Serum foundation.
Powder and setting spray for extra hold
Once you've applied all your make-up, you can use a transparent (mattifying) powder to set it. Only apply this powder to the areas that need it, often the T-zone (forehead and nose).
You can also use a setting spray to fix your make-up, of course. But did you know that after applying powder, a setting spray brings your face back to life? What's more, you can use it again during the day to refresh your make-up. You'll appreciate the extra freshness!
