Make it unforgettable
Do you want an original wedding cake? Then, as well as a delicious cake, make it an unforgettable experience for you and your guests. Karolien Be yens explains : ‘Couples don't just want a cake, they want to create a moment. Everyone looks up in wonder, there are smiling faces everywhere and the bride and groom are beaming next to the cake. It's that ‘wow’ moment that you have to look for!"
Opt for a personal touch
Second tip for an original wedding cake: make sure your personality and style are incorporated into every aspect of the wedding cake. Karolien: "Choose a unique cake that is made entirely to measure for you. When doing so, don't forget to specify what you want the cake to look like. If you like romance and elegance, don't make a cake that's too busy."
From design and decoration to colours and flavour combinations, communicate your personal preferences to your cake designer so they can tailor everything to your exact needs. Karolien gives a few examples: "Last winter, a couple asked for their wedding cake to be Harry Potter themed. I added a little owl. There wasalso once a couple who wanted a Santorini-style cake, and a bride who wanted elements of her wedding dress incorporated into the cake. For me, everything is negotiable."
Choosing the right combination of taste and appearance
For Karolien Beyens, the perfect wedding cake is the right combination of taste and appearance. "A wedding cake has to be both tasty and beautiful. The appearance of the cake is just as important as the taste. The first impression is crucial. But it's also the taste of the cake and how you feel after the first bite that determines what you think of the cake. Above all, the cake has to make you happy," explains Karolien. So she recommends working with a cake designer who spends a lot of time designing and perfecting every detail.
Taste and discuss
An important tip for choosing your wedding cake? Taste it! At Karolien, for example, you can taste eight different combinations during a tasting session. "I can also make flavours that aren't on my menu of choices. There areso many options that it's impossible to list all the flavours’, Karolien laughs.
During the tasting, have a long chat with each other and with your cake designer. As well as the flavours, discuss other aspects of the cake, such as the shape, colour, decoration and theme. Karolien gives a tip : ‘Share your mood boards and ideas here. I'll also brainstorm with you about the style you'd like to adopt and make an initial sketch during our conversation. If that sketch isn't right, I'll make a new one until the image is perfect.’
Make sure you also discuss the number of people, the wedding venue and the delivery of the wedding cake. In doing so, make clear agreements with your cake designer so you know what to expect.
Order your wedding cake on time
Karolien offers a final tip: "Don't wait until the last minute to order your wedding cake. It's best to order it six months in advance to make sure it's completely to your liking."
