How to travel to the Greek islands?

No fewer than 28 Greek islands have an airport, and at least half of them offer direct flights to and from Belgium. To reach the other islands, count on a 3-hour flight to Athens, from where you can take a domestic flight, or board a cruise ship in Piraeus to the largest islands. You can also easily get to the region by car, for example via Italy’s Ancona, Bari or Brindisi, where you can drive onto a ferry heading to the Greek island of your choice.
Popular island hopping ferries include those to picturesque Hydra, to green Andros and to Tinos — the spiritual heart of Greece. Of course, many cruises also sail to the large islands of Crete and Rhodes, and to many others.
Another great option: go for a sailing holiday! In western Lefkas or Preveza, book a catamaran or sailing yacht with or without a skipper, and set off as a couple to discover the many beautiful little islands.
Advantages of a honeymoon to the Greek islands
Because the Greek islands are so diverse and fit every budget, everyone can find something that suits them.
You can hike, cycle, snorkel and dive, and unwind on the most beautiful beaches.
The sunsets are phenomenal—especially in the Cyclades.
Heads up!
Just so you know:
During your honeymoon, you’ll probably want to avoid crowded beaches and long lines at tourist attractions. So check where cruise ships dock to steer clear of large crowds, and settle on the other side of the island.
Greece is a very safe country, but keep a close eye on your belongings in the busier tourist areas.
Best time to travel for your honeymoon to the Greek islands

All year round, temperatures are pleasantly warm on the Greek islands. They enjoy a Mediterranean climate with warm summers and mild, dry winters. The travel period from May through October usually sees temperatures around 30°C. Rain is very rare then, and the sea stays warm at around 22°C. Because there are many differences between the islands themselves, it’s hard to pinpoint an exact temperature. You’ll also largely escape the summer heatwaves that can occur on mainland Greece, thanks to the many sea breezes.
The best activities during your honeymoon to the Greek islands
Of the roughly 3,000 Greek islands, there are dozens you can truly fall in love with. Pop stars, media personalities, and anyone who can afford it—whether or not they have a superyacht—love staying on a Greek island. Leonard Cohen and Richard Branson fell for Hydra, and Lady Gaga couldn’t get enough of Elounda in Crete. Mariah Carey, Bon Jovi, U2 and Pedro Almodóvar also lost their hearts to this charming fishing village in the north of Crete.
Explore Kos by bike
Do you love cycling? Then head to the bike island of Kos, where flat roads and well-maintained cycle paths invite you to ride across the entire island—beach towel in the basket and hair in the wind. Cycle to Zia, the prettiest mountain village on Kos, or visit the hot springs 12 km from the capital, where they flow into the sea.
Hike on Andros
Andros, meanwhile, is a hiker’s paradise. You’ll find more than 300 kilometres of hiking trails along mountains, ravines, lakes, waterfalls and forests. You’ll pass old forts, picturesque little harbours, and more than 70 bays and beaches. If you love climbing through green forests, you’ll truly enjoy the cool shade that Mount Petalon offers at around 1,000 metres altitude.
Discover Zakynthos by boat

Zakynthos is called the pearl among the Greek islands. Rent a little boat and visit the crystal-clear blue caves. Or sail to Turtle Island, where majestic loggerhead turtles lay their eggs. Highly recommended for an unforgettable beachy honeymoon!
Soak up culture in Rhodes
In Rhodes, sun worshippers and beach lovers aren’t the only ones who get their fill—culture enthusiasts will too. The medieval history in particular has left abundant traces here in the form of impressive fortifications and castles. The old town of Rhodes is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site as the largest and best-preserved fortified city in Europe! Also visit Lindos, a vibrant town full of archaeology with postcard charm.
Something for everyone in Crete
In Crete, delights follow one another at a rapid pace: enjoy the most beautiful beaches and discover Greek myths during a visit to the ruins of Knossos. Kouremenos beach is the place to go for windsurfing, because it’s always windy here. As a born hiker, you’ll definitely want to cross the Samaria Gorge, the narrowest gorge in the world—even though it’s 16 km long. Also plan a day at the freshwater lake Kournas, a hidden gem between the mountains. Not only can you swim there wonderfully, you can also take a catamaran out on the water. Finally, you’ll undoubtedly fall in love with the romantic harbour town of Chania in the northwest of the island, where you can wander endlessly through the maze of the old town.
Honeymooning in Santorini

In Santorini, all the advantages of a honeymoon to the Greek islands come together in a unique way. Every year, masses of people travel to the small village of Oia to witness the spectacular sunset, visit the erupted volcano, and enjoy the red volcanic sand on Red Beach. White houses, a black volcano, a red beach, and deep-blue water all around—a combination you’ll never forget!
