1. An endless color palette
In fine art photography, you can really feel that “lightness” and “elegance” are key characteristics. Photographer Elisabeth Van Lent says: “‘Light’ doesn’t necessarily mean the clothing or styling has to be in pastel tones. ‘Fine Art’ is often wrongly associated with pastels, while I just as happily photograph bold colors.” Couples or wedding stylists often choose pastels because they’re timeless shades—but you can absolutely opt for brighter colors for a fine art wedding, too.
2. Black and white, just like in the old days
Elisabeth considers light the essential condition for achieving an optimal fine art result. That’s why she prefers photographing in spaces with white walls and strong natural light, or right in the middle of nature. Once evening falls and it inevitably gets dark, Elisabeth usually switches to black-and-white photos. They’re timeless and complement the daytime photos beautifully.

3. Eternal love
According to Elisabeth, couples often choose fine art photography because of the light: “I often hear from couples that their day needs to radiate ‘love.’ For some, that’s the main reason to deliberately choose light.” The images usually speak for themselves and truly preserve the romantic atmosphere of the wedding day... for ever!
4. Analog photography and the corresponding look
Elisabeth Van Lent shoots most of her reportages on analog film. This means the film rolls are developed in a lab and photo editing afterwards is kept to a minimum. Analog photography isn’t a fixed rule within the fine art style, but photographers who do shoot digitally sometimes edit the photos afterwards until they achieve an analog look.
5. A rendezvous between the expected and the unexpected
“The classic, timeless, and elegant is present in every form of fine art photography, but personally I like to combine it with very spontaneous moments,” says Elisabeth. In her reportages, she not only focuses on the key moments of the wedding day, but also likes to add a personal touch to the details. This way, both spontaneous gestures and small and big emotions are captured in a way that has lasting value for the moved couple.
