1. Bright, bold, colorful, daring colors
We have spent enough time indoors during the pandemic and now want to break out. We see that feeling reflected in this year's colors. Flowers in bright, bold colors are the choice. “Color is very much present this year,” says Seda from Seda's Bloemenatelier. “In the past, couples traditionally chose white, but now the demand for white is decreasing. White is making way for brighter and more exotic colors,” confirms Diederik from VIVA Blooming. Katrien from Ateljee Boekee adds: “We are moving away from classic, neutral shades and towards dramatic color combinations to make a statement.” Lieselot from LOTS Flower Art adds: “By choosing bright colors, we want to emphasize the colorful more than ever.” Martijn from Florentius also sees his couples often having a stronger preference for more intense colors.

2. Rust and peach: the colors of '22
According to these professional florists, two types of colors will be hugely popular in 2022. Firstly, ‘autumn tones’ such as orange, red, and rust are very popular. “These colors are a perfect match for rustic banquet halls, which are becoming increasingly popular,” says Lieselot. People who prefer not to get married in the summer often opt for a typical Indian Summer autumn wedding with lots of green, red, and orange.

In addition, there is also a clear rise in popularity of peach tones. “Peach is actually almost the new white! It's a very beautiful and soft color,” says Diederik. Seda also confirms: “Rust and peach are really the colors of 2022.”

3. Backdrops
In recent years, many new formats have been added to the world of flowers, and the backdrop is one of them. Backdrops are very popular at the moment. A backdrop literally means ‘background decoration’ and is often seen as ‘the decorative eye-catcher’ of a wedding party. Backdrops come in different colors, sizes, and shapes. Diederik explains: “In recent years, personal, symbolic ceremonies at original locations have become increasingly popular. A unique backdrop, instead of the classic altar in a church, invariably forms the backdrop for the ‘I do’.”

According to Lieselot, no less than 70% of her couples opt for a symbolic ceremony, and Katrien adds: “In 2022, even more attention and budget will be devoted to the decoration of such a ceremony. Backdrops will become real statements with a wow effect”. Lieselot has also noticed a shift in the types of backdrops people want: “Originally, backdrops were usually square, but now couples often choose a backdrop in the shape of a circle, hexagon, or triangle. They're going for that Scandinavian style.”
4. Sustainability
Sustainability is also starting to play an increasingly important role in our lives. This eco-friendly mindset is also reflected in the wedding choices we make. Couples and professionals are thinking more about how they can contribute to nature during a wedding. “Sustainability and choosing seasonal flowers is still key,” says Katrien. Seda adds: “Seasonal flowers are much more sustainable and also cheaper. For example, don't choose peonies in winter, but ranunculus instead.” Don't worry if you're not sure which flowers are the best choice in which season. Your professional florist will be happy to help you! “Couples often give me free rein when it comes to choosing flowers and trust my judgment. When making that choice, I always try to pay attention to the season,” says Stefanie from Art of Flower. Another fun and sustainable idea: “I enjoy making personal pieces that can be handed out at the end of the evening. For example, flower arrangements in disposable containers. Unique and sustainable too,” says Stefanie.

5. Mix of dried and fresh flowers
“Dried flowers and silk flowers are still on the rise,” Katrien begins. Due to the importance of sustainability, the demand for dried flowers will increase in 2022. The combination of dried flowers with fresh flowers is particularly popular. Lieselot explains: “You often see couples facing a dilemma: dried flowers last longer, but are often less voluminous and colorful. That's why people often opt for a mix of dried and fresh flowers; fresh flowers always add a little more color.” The big advantage of dried flowers is, of course, that you can keep them longer, which opens up a whole range of possibilities. Seda says: “I enjoy building a relationship with my customers and staying in touch with them even after their wedding. My customers can bring in their bridal bouquet or table decorations and I turn them into ‘flower clouds’ or wreaths. First, they dry their flowers themselves, following the instructions I give them. Then I get to work for them. It's been a huge success!” Popular this year: pampas grass and desert grass.

6. Individual floral decorations
Whereas in the past, a single centerpiece on the tables was often preferred, we are now seeing a growing trend toward multiple, individual floral decorations. The classic table decoration is being replaced by an elegant combination of vases with flowers.

For plants, on the other hand, bigger is better. Smaller plants, or a combination thereof, are now less popular than they used to be. Nowadays, couples often opt for two or three large trees to decorate their wedding venue.
7. Creative with flowers
Flowers can be incorporated into almost anything! This year, we are seeing an increasing demand for creative floral decorations. There are endless possibilities for incorporating flowers into everything from hair wreaths and bracelets to cake decorations and welcome signs. According to Seda, hair wreaths are becoming increasingly popular: “The bride wears a beautiful hair wreath of flowers instead of a veil. Sometimes the hair wreath is also woven into the veil.”

8. Customization
Couples are becoming increasingly creative and are less likely to follow the beaten path. Unique, original, and personal creations will therefore be central in 2022. This means that florists will be able to do more and more custom work. And they love that, because it allows them to give free rein to their creativity. Diederik says: "No matter how big or small the wedding is, everyone deserves custom work. Getting married is often expensive, so as a couple you really want a unique result. Every wedding has its own unique characteristics and it is important to use flowers to create unity between the styling of the wedding party and the couple. It is not an ‘and/and’ story, but a ‘together’ story. In this way, flowers form a beautiful connection between all the other wedding elements.” Driven by a desire to work in an increasingly personalized way, Seda also finds it important to make connections to other wedding elements: “I always ask not to throw away any extra fabric from the wedding dress, because then I use a piece of fabric from the wedding dressas ribbon for the floral decoration.”

9. Pinterest continues to inspire
Pinterest continues to inspire. During the coronavirus pandemic, we were inspired by millions of possibilities with flowers from the comfort of our own homes. Martijn explains: "Thanks to Pinterest, we can find so many things that might not immediately occur to us otherwise. For example, it's very easy to discover the best color combinations, which encourages couples to be more adventurous with their own celebrations. Seda adds: “More and more often, couples create mood boards, with an image of how they want their wedding party to look and, therefore, what floral creations they have in mind. I really like that, but I always make it clear that I won't copy and paste, because I can't and don't want to make exactly the same creation.”

But Pinterest can also cause headaches. Lieselot explains: “Almost all of my customers bring a virtual Pinterest board with them. This makes it easier to see what they want, but... there are also a lot of edited photos on Pinterest, which means you can't always meet their expectations.” Seda agrees: “Flower photos on Pinterest are often edited in such a way that the flowers have colors that don't exist in reality.” Transparent communication with the couples is therefore important.
10. Experiencing nature
The wedding decorations of 2022 often revolve around the theme of ‘nature’. Even when the party takes place indoors, the natural feeling of the outdoors is carried over. We want to see, experience, and smell nature. We will see a lot of autumn colors in 2022, and the natural scent of autumn leaves will be a great added value. Olive trees are also gradually disappearing: most couples want something different and are opting for southern trees such as fig trees and pomegranate trees with fruit still on them! Seda adds: “Natural, wild flowers are becoming increasingly popular. I have also noticed that couples are choosing roses less and less. I often work with garden roses, which smell wonderful, by the way! They are very popular.”
