1. Boating
Plenty of choice to visit Ghent from the water. Would you like to take a ‘cruise’ to the painter's village of Latem and enjoy a romantic dinner with live jazz music on board? Or would you rather be at the helm of your own motorboat with all the comfort and freedom? Have a delivery service deliver some bubbles and snacks to the quay and off you go! With an electrically controlled raft, you'll even enjoy a private terrace slowly sliding past the most beautiful facades of the Gras- and Korenlei. Of course, a marriage proposal in Ghent in canoe or kayak is also romantic, and intimate under the overhanging trees.
2. Prinsenhof
Feel like a prince or princess in the Prinsenhof, a quiet neighbourhood full of memories of Charles V's birthplace. Once a year, this little square is part of Ghent's biggest flea market and has a playful atmosphere during the Prinsenhof festivities. The rest of the year it is a great place to relax. The statue of Charles V looks curiously over your shoulders and a proposal in this historic place will stay with you and him forever.
3. Patershol
Patershol takes you back to the Middle Ages. This is actually a city-within-a-city, a place full of nostalgia that now has a hip mix of popular cafés and trendy bars. Many restaurants with flavours from all over the world cuisine will lure you here. An extra cosy spot for both of you can be found in the garden of the House of Alijn. In this picturesque museum with atmospheric pub, you will relive the old traditions in full, an excellent atmosphere for the Great Question that is coming up. Especially if you or your loved one would like a bridal gown style grand-mère with lots of pearls, lace and veil, you will find inspiration here. In the evening, find a candlelit café and muse blissfully on the little bridge over the Lieve, along which Walter de Buck, founder of the Ghent Festivities, draped his monumental statues.
4. The most beautiful bridge in Ghent
The view that St Michael's Bridge offers of the Castle of Counts, the Korenlei and Graslei is simply stunning - a picture that has already gone around the world and remains immortal. Medieval bunkhouses and UNESCO-recognised heritage are at your feet here. At night and especially around Christmas and New Year, this is undoubtedly the most romantic spot in Ghent. Asking your partner to marry you on Ghent's most beautiful bridge, beating heart of history and trendy culture, is an unforgettable moment for both of you.
5. A light walk
Thanks to an architectural lighting plan, Ghent has created ambient lighting that immerses the entire city centre in one luminous bath. Between sunset and midnight, the city is transformed into a magical evening landscape that artistically envelops buildings, streets and squares. No more atmospheric place for your wedding proposal in Ghent than under one of the enduring works of light art left behind by the city's triennial Festival of Lights. How about Maeterlinck's Blue Birds that appear to perch on the branches of that one tree on Predikherenlei at night? Breathtaking to take a knee in this blue light!
6. From champagne cellar to jazz club
In Ghent you can stroll all day between bookstores and museums and you may even be quite hesitant about where to have your first apero: in a whisky, wine or gin bar, in a champagne cellar or at a rum-tasting. Especially on Sundays, you can go full bore on some squares for bubbles and oysters. Ask the waiters if they would like to draw the attention of the attendees and put on your bold shoes. A thunderous applause is sure to follow the smiling ‘Yes, I will!’ reply....
7. Gastronomic delights
In Ghent you will find a top cast of chefs who are reinventing gastronomy in their own way. So there is no shortage of culinary hotspots in this city, which seems to be one big tasty stroll. Book a delicious dinner and get down on one knee during dessert - an enchanting scenario for your marriage proposal in Ghent!
