An engagement ring is (almost) always part of the package
According to the National Marriage Survey, no less than 95% of couples consider an engagement ring to be an essential part of a marriage proposal. In most cases, it is chosen by the partner and purchased from a jeweller or designer. What other choices do couples make today when it comes to engagement rings and marriage proposals? Engagement ring trends for 2026
1. Diamonds remain king
The vast majority of couples still opt for a diamond engagement ring: no less than 70%. The classic brilliant cut is more popular than ever and remains the symbol par excellence. However, the traditional design is increasingly being given a modern twist, with unique accents or subtle details.
2. Coloured stones with character
Almost 30% of couples today choose an alternative to diamonds: sapphire (8.2%), emerald (3.3%) and ruby (1.4%) are particularly popular. Less traditional choices such as champagne-coloured diamonds or uncut gemstones are also gaining ground. They create a unique, warm look and make a classic design very personal.
3. Refined cuts
In addition to the round brilliant cut, oval and pear-shaped stones are also becoming increasingly popular. They look elegant and refined and suit both classic and modern styles. Those who opt for a slightly larger, more striking design are now consciously choosing an alternative cut.
4. Solitaire with a twist
The classic solitaire remains the most popular, and in 2026 it will feature more detail: an engraved band, a hidden engraving or subtle asymmetry. This makes the design timeless and unique: classic with a personal touch.
5. Vintage influences
Rings with a story are back in fashion. Think of heirlooms with a new look, engraved bands or designs inspired by the art deco style. Vintage is ideal for those who love romance with a touch of nostalgia and character.
6. Yellow gold is making a comeback
After years in which white gold and rose gold were the standard, yellow gold is making a comeback in engagement rings and wedding rings. It combines beautifully with coloured stones and classic diamonds and has a warm, stylish look; a subtle nod to timeless elegance in a modern context.
7. Ethical choices and sustainability
For a growing number of couples, the origin of the ring also plays an important role. Recycled gold, ethically sourced diamonds and Belgian designers with a local, artisanal approach are gaining in importance. The ring thus also becomes a symbol of the values you want to convey together. Within the broader jewellery trends of 2026, we also see a clear movement towards sustainability, craftsmanship and conscious choices.
Marriage proposal trends for 2026
1. The proposal itself: intimate, prepared and often on holiday
The National Marriage Survey shows that the marriage proposal is a moment that couples really look forward to:
84.8% of proposals still happen “on one knee”;
More than 40% make the marriage proposal on holiday, often in a place that has meaning for them together;
27% of couples proposed at a moment that “just felt right”;
10% chose to propose on a symbolic date, while birthdays, Valentine's Day, Christmas and New Year's Eve are also popular moments;
Only 2% post the news immediately on social media. Most couples consciously take the time to enjoy the moment together first.
Almost half of the couples also asked their parents or parents-in-law for permission beforehand. The classic “asking for permission” is still alive and well, but is no longer a ritual that is taken for granted.
2. The ring as a surprise or chosen together
Traditionally, one of the partners chooses the ring, and this will continue to be the case in 2025. However, we are seeing a growing number of couples choosing the ring together after the proposal, or discussing what would be suitable before the proposal.
3. More and more women are proposing
Although the classic proposal is usually made by men (87%), we are seeing a steady increase in the number of women proposing marriage. In this survey, almost 1 in 13 women (approximately 7 to 8%) indicated that they had proposed themselves. Almost 1 in 10 couples make the decision to marry together.
And the wedding rings?
Wedding rings also remain important for couples. 92.5% buy wedding rings, and more than 1 in 4 opt for a custom design. Most couples make the choice together, usually between three and nine months before the wedding day. Style, trust and service are more important than price or the location of the jeweller.
Timeless and personal
In 2026, couples will be looking for rings that are meaningful, whether that's a traditional diamond or a custom-made ring with a coloured stone and a touch of nostalgia. Symbolism is playing an increasingly important role: from a subtle engraving to an heirloom that has been given a new lease of life, couples are increasingly choosing a ring that tells their story.
