7 things you should know about Northern Greece
The region of Northern Greece is about a third larger than Belgium and has a population of almost three million.
From November to March, it can rain quite often, but in late spring and autumn, and especially during the summer months, the sun shines brightly and the temperatures are wonderfully summery.
This region is home to Thessaloniki, Greece's second largest city. A beautiful city with a wealth of culture, but also a wonderfully vibrant place with a hip club scene for those who love to go out.
Nature is omnipresent and very diverse. From high mountains, wine hills, inviting lakes, and cooling forests to wet meadows where millions of birds mate and breed. And the beaches of the Chalkidiki or Halkidiki peninsula are spectacular.
From Belgium, you can fly directly to Thessaloniki, which is easy and the flights are not that expensive.
If you're looking for some culture, don't miss these four excursions: Vergina (the tomb of King Philip, father of Alexander the Great), Ancient Pella (birthplace of Alexander the Great), the Byzantine heritage in Thessaloniki, and a boat trip past the imposing monasteries of Athos.
Everyone is familiar with typical Mediterranean cuisine. Although the food in northern Greece is a little spicier than in the rest of the country.

Except for the city of Thessaloniki, northern Greece may have remained relatively unknown until now, but the beautiful Halkidiki peninsula with its three headlands is a real must-see. Golden beaches with calm, clear blue shallow sea water, Greek delicacies, soaking up culture, good wine, relaxing and enjoying yourself, all with the bustling city of Thessaloniki nearby. That sounds very tempting...
