1) Check whether your partner is ready
Are you on the same wavelength? Is your partner also ready for the next step? A good way to find out is to pay attention to how your partner talks about the future. If he or she consistently refers to “we” and “us” and keeps involving you in future plans, you know your bond is rock-solid—and that your partner is ready to start the next chapter together.
2) Hunt down the right ring size
A proposal, of course, calls for a ring. Your proposal will be even more special if that ring fits right away. If you’re lucky, your partner wears a ring on their ring finger that you can “borrow” briefly to figure out the right size. Or perhaps your partner’s best friend knows the correct ring size? If your partner is a sound sleeper, you might be able to measure the right size with a piece of string around their finger...

Really unsure? Then buy the ring slightly larger. It’s easier for a professional to make a ring smaller than to make it bigger. Be sure to check with your jeweler whether this is possible, because not every material can be adjusted.
3) Create the perfect setting
You know your partner better than anyone, and you know what he or she loves. So try to plan your proposal in a way that makes your partner feel comfortable. Is your partner more of an introvert? Then it’s best to keep your marriage proposal private. Do they enjoy being the center of attention? Then you might go a bit bigger and propose in public. Make the moment unique by choosing a location that’s symbolic or inspiring for you both, playing your song, or preparing a text that builds up to the question through beautiful memories.
4) Capture the moment
By having someone secretly take photos of your proposal, you’ll create a wonderful keepsake of this special moment. The photos are also perfect for announcing your engagement on social media, and for your save-the-date cards. In the United States, it’s already a trend to hire a professional photographer. That way, you can be sure your photos will turn out great!
5) Ask the parents for their blessing
Parents are often among your partner’s best friends. By asking them for their blessing, they may be able to give you a few last tips for your perfect proposal. Plus, they’ll certainly appreciate being informed about your plans—making you the ideal son-in-law or daughter-in-law!
