Honeymoon Guide: honeymooning in Mexico, the land of Mayas and Aztecs, salsa and tequila

Do you want to honeymoon in a tropical destination with golden beaches, luxury resorts and a fascinating ancient civilisation? Then go for a honeymoon in Mexico! Year-round here, you'll enjoy water temperatures between 24 and 35 degrees in the Caribbean Sea. Take a fresher dive in cenotes: hollowed-out depths with the purest water. Add swaying palm trees, exotic fruits and colourful cocktails, and the two of you will enjoy your honeymoon in Mexico!

How to travel to Mexico?

Direct flights to Mexico depart daily from Europe. A direct flight from Brussels takes about 14 hours. Usually, newlyweds book direct flights from Brussels to Cancun, but Mexico has about 30 other airports. With a stopover, for example, you fly to Mexico City in about 15 hours. Slightly longer it takes to fly to Cozumel, Mérida, Acapulco or Guadelajara with one or two stopovers.

Best travel time for your honeymoon to Mexico

On honeymoon, you might prefer to go to the south with its downright tropical climate. Couples often honeymoon on the Yucatán peninsula, with the best time to travel being between December and April. This is because during summer it can get quite hot there, up to above 30 degrees, and then you might hit a hurricane or heavy rains. Even when temperatures drop in January, it still averages 26 degrees, making for the perfect climate.
TIP: avoid the traditional holiday periods, as this is when prices rise significantly everywhere. Indeed, around Christmas, New Year and Easter, tourists from all over the world like to seek out the Mexican sun.

Benefits of a honeymoon to Mexico

A honeymoon to Mexico makes you forget all about your home country. You will be absorbed into a world with totally different vibes, smells and colours and live along to the rhythm of upbeat Mexican music.

With the fantastic world heritage temples and pyramids of the Mayas and Aztecs, you can cross a wonder of the world off your bucket list.

Want peace, sun and sea? The entire Yucatán peninsula is at your feet.

During your honeymoon in Mexico, you will enjoy the refined and exotic Mexican cuisine. Taste lavishly of Mexican specialities such as tacos, tortillas, enchiladas and nachos.

Take note!

Just so you know...

In different areas, it's best to be wary. Find out carefully where danger codes orange and red apply for crime and remember that many regions fall under the colour code yellow.

Avoid the area around the Popocatépetl and Colima volcanoes. In fact, the authorities here prohibit entry within a 5km radius because of high crime rates.

Provide both Mexican Pesos (MXN) and US Dollars. You will need dollars for the more official payments, such as those for museums and all kinds of accommodation. Pesos are best to have with you when you go into town, visit small restaurants and shops or use a taxi. Book your pesos here in Belgium or check exchange rates near your accommodation before you leave. Order larger amounts you withdraw well in advance in Belgium.

ATMs, especially the single ones, are not safe everywhere in Mexico. Scamming remains possible, and commission fees are also variable. Don't withdraw money on a busy street - rather step into an official bank and do your transaction there. Take a VISA or internationally known Mastercard with you.

Beware of the highway police! If they ask you to pay your fine immediately in pesos, tell them you want to call the tourist police first. In fact, this is usually a scam.

What to do on your honeymoon to Mexico

Discover the beautiful nature

Are you keen hikers and nature lovers? Then join us on an exploration of one of the many volcanoes located in the Valley around Mexico City. The many other natural parks will also make your heart beat faster.

Cenotes

Gates to heaven or the underworld according to the ancient Mayans, guaranteeing hours of swimming pleasure for any tourist. Tip: plan enough time to visit these cenotes, some you reach via a slightly more adventurous route!
Mexico's most beautiful cenotes:

Dos Ojos

Casa cenote

X'Canche ek balam (editor's favourite!)

Explore the jungle

Are you really hungry for adventure? Head out into the jungle or even book an overnight stay there. Some hotels have beautiful sunrises and no range. A unique activity to cross off your bucket list is the zipline tour in Puerto Vallarta with a choice of 11 different cable cars! For that matter, the more daring among us can venture into the jungle, either alone or guided.

Snorkelling & diving

During your honeymoon in Mexico, also explore the wonderful underwater world, full of colourful coral reefs and exotic fish. Snorkel hand-in-hand with turtles at the Great Mayan Reef. Or learn to dive and discover the unique underwater world of turtle bay Akumal! Isla Cozumel is also a dream location for water sports enthusiasts.

Go salsa dancing!

Wherever you go in Mexico, you won't escape the fun salsa music echoing from beach bars and on the streets. Are you heading to the slightly smaller towns? Take an evening stroll and discover how streets are turned into the locals' dance floor at night.

Playa del Carmen

Visit the many small fishing ports near Playa del Carmen on Yucatán and go shopping in the picturesque souvenir shops. Also venture out into the lively streets and sample the many varieties of Tequila that Mexico offers.

Isla Holbox

Also add a trip to La Isla Holbox, a northern islet, to your itinerary. Isla Holbox looks like a Bounty island - car-free but a true paradise for golf carts.

Take a boat trip

Take a boat trip in the northern Río Lagartos nature reserve, a UNESCO biosphere reserve. 40,000 pink flamingos await you. Stunning sunrises and sunsets against a backdrop of pink salt flats are also included. Pink is all around you!

Unwind on Cancun's beaches

Cancún is the favourite beach resort of many. The elongated white sand beach with kilometres of swaying palm trees along the deep blue ocean is therefore the perfect setting for your honeymoon. Enjoy a massage under the radiant sun and a soft lounge-bed on the warm sand. At night - after all that rest - you can head to the nightclubs!

Campeche

Planning a honeymoon on the Yucatán peninsula? Then be sure to visit the fortified city of Campeche. This colourful and stylish town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stroll through the charming old town and enjoy the pastel-coloured houses.

Chichén Itzá

Cross a wonder of the world off your list while visiting the Kukulcán Step Pyramid in Chichén Itzá. Located between Mérida and Cancun, come here on a day trip or Chichén Itzá is a perfect stopover on your tour. This temple complex is among the best restored and most visited monuments in Mexico. So it's best to arrive here at sunrise and on a weekday.

Bring an international passport that is valid for at least 6 months after your return. On board the plane, you will receive visa forms that you fill in and hand in at customs in Mexico. Tip: as a personal precaution, always keep a copy of this visa form. You can also request the form online in advance. It is called a Forma Migratoria Múltiple (FMM), a Multiple Immigration Form, and is applicable for stays of less than 180 days.

Make sure you have a return ticket, or if booking a single ticket, a transport document indicating that you are subsequently travelling from Mexico to another destination. Always consult https://diplomatie.belgium.be before your departure . Vaccinations are not compulsory but are recommended.
