How to travel to Tuscany?
Tuscany is located in the heart of Italy. This makes it easy to get to your destination. In less than two hours you can fly from Brussels directly to Pisa, Florence or Bologna. By train, you can cover these 1000 km in between 12 and 18 hours, depending on the changes you make. Via Switzerland and Austria, you can also book an extremely comfortable sleeper train that takes you right into the heart of Florence. The ÖBB Nightjet in particular will not disappoint! Do you prefer a romantic road trip through France, Switzerland or Austria? Do you put your car partly on the train or do you like to drive all the way yourself? Anything is possible. Remember that in some locations you will need a motorway vignette, which you can buy at border crossings.
The assets of a honeymoon to Tuscany
- Tuscany is widely recognised as one of the most romantic holiday spots in Europe.
- The diversity between cities, villages and becoming one with nature is not easily experienced anywhere in Europe.
- Do you like being surrounded by greenery and tranquillity or do you prefer relaxing on the beach with some tourist highlights in the background? It's all possible during your honeymoon to Tuscany!
Attention!
Just so you know:
Tuscany is a beautiful destination, but a few warnings are in order here, especially if you're road-tripping .
- If you come via Switzerland or Austria, apply your vignette before crossing the border. For Austria itself, three vignettes of different durations are available (for 10 days, 2 months or a full year). To avoid delays at tunnels, a digital route toll (a Videomaut) does come in handy, as it allows you to take the special bypass. Apply for these here!
- In general, avoid busy days and weekends during high season to visit the most popular spots and beaches.
- Bear in mind that many Italian cities are car-low or car-free. Car parks just outside the city centre come in handy here.
- An invisible enemy is section controls on motorways. However, it is best not to signal your sat nav for speed cameras, as this can result in a hefty fine.
- Drive carefully everywhere, because there are many wild boars around, which can cause a lot of animal and emotional suffering as well as damage to your car.
Best time to honeymoon in Tuscany
Tuscany has a very pleasant climate all year round. In winter the temperature rarely drops below 12 degrees, in spring and autumn the averages are around 20 degrees and in summer this rises to just under 30 degrees. Between June and October is the best travel time to explore Tuscany, with temperatures very pleasant and very limited rainfall. The month of May is also beautiful, when nature is already in full bloom!
The best activities during a honeymoon in Tuscany
Discover the nature of Tuscany on foot
Hikers love to explore the Elsa Trail in the small village of Colle di Val d'Elsa, near Siena. After a two-kilometre walk, take a dip in the small lake at the 15-metre-high Diborrato waterfall. Want to hike and dive into a hot spring? Then head to Saturnia Hot Springs. These are several pools in the middle of a small but powerful waterfall, which maintains a constant temperature of 37 degrees thanks to the nearby volcano.
Thermal springs
No shortage of thermal springs during your honeymoon in Tuscany! The ancient Romans were also particularly fond of them and the Montecatini Terme in particular will take you back to this era for a while. Since 2021, by the way, these spas have been on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of Europe's historic spas. By the way, it is particularly romantic to enjoy a thermal bath together outdoors, like in Petriolo or in San Filippo!
Canyoning
Fancy a bit of adventure on your honeymoon in Tuscany? Then while visiting a waterfall, make time for canyoning too!
Explore Tuscan villages and their traditions
If you happen to be in Lucca on the weekend of 27 April, you will love strolling around the big flower market, the Fiera dei Fiori di Santa Zita. Or are you in Siena on 2 June or 16 August? Then soak up the euphoria of the urban horse race, held between the city's different districts. TIP: Book your hotel during this Palio delle Contrade at least one year in advance! Are you getting married early in the year and like some partying? Then be in Viareggio on three Sundays in February for the ultimate carnival experience.
Besides these traditions, you will enjoy the charms of the typical Tuscan villages and towns all year round. Florence is number one here, with its world-famous Duomo, Ponte Vecchio and Uffizi Museum. Fashion brand Gucci also hails from Florence, and the Gucci Garden and Museum is definitely worth a visit. Then in Siena, you can taste the most delicious ice creams in Piazza del Campo - arguably the most beautiful city square in Europe. Of course you have to stop by Pisa, if only to see for yourself how leaning a tower can be without falling over... AND to take that typical photo! Insta-hotspot?
Stay in a local villa, castle or farmhouse
The agriturismo is particularly popular in Tuscany and is a quality addition to traditional honeymoon locations. Stay in a flat or villa that is part of an authentic farmhouse, vineyard or an old castle. It is the perfect opportunity to completely relax surrounded by nature and sample freshly baked Tuscan bread, local olive oil, pesto and honey, tomatoes and pasta. Tuscan cuisine indulges all your senses. Food pair the culinary delights with Chianti, a delicious Tuscan wine.
Rent a Vespa
Looking for romance à l'italienne? Then traverse Tuscany during your honeymoon on a vintage Vespa. The Vespa symbolises zest for life, freedom and la dolce vita. Discover dozens of small Tuscan villages, most of them full of medieval memories - with dozens of tall towers (San Gimignano), high city walls (Lucca, Anghiari) and lavish wine cellars (Montepulciano, Montalcino).
Trek along the Via dell' Amore
To end your honeymoon in Tuscany, trek along the famous 'Love Road' (Via dell' Amore) to Lucignano, where locals are invariably convinced that the 'Golden Tree' or the 'Tree of Love' is said to have aphrodisiac powers according to an ancient belief. Couples still often go there to pronounce their wedding vows, or to repeat them there.
Or trek another 35 km further to the small Renaissance town of Pienza, where you wander through the four winding 'Streets of Love'. You have only just passed the 'Street of Love', or you are already wandering down the 'Street of Happiness' and the 'Street of Kiss'. Delightful, right?
Relaxing on the beach
If, as a couple, you mainly want to sunbathe and relax on beautiful beaches, you will definitely find them on the Tuscan coast. Especially popular are the beaches near Pisa, such as Marina di Pisa. For the ultimate beach holiday, you can also cross over to one of the Tuscan islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Remember the beach at Spiaggia della Padulella on the island of Elba. The beaches on the Gulf of Baratti and at Cala Violina are also places of paradise. The latter beach is in the Bandite di Scarlino nature reserve where you can also snorkel in the clear waters. If you are honeymooning with the kids, take them to the Parco Nationale Tanuta di San Rossore near Pisa, where they can expend their energy on the beautiful beach.

I'm going on my honeymoon to Tuscany and I'm taking....
Packing your valise for a honeymoon to Tuscany is not difficult. Especially during summer, it will mainly consist of breezy clothes that you can easily jump on a Vespa with. In addition, think about swimwear, walking shoes and sunglasses. Leave a little space in your suitcase though, because 'Italy' and 'shopping' do go hand in hand...
In practical terms, make sure you have a valid driving licence (A1 or B) to drive a (rental) car and/or Vespa, your identity card and your European health insurance card.
