How to travel to Mexico?
Direct flights to Mexico depart daily from Europe. A direct flight from Brussels takes about 14 hours. Usually, newlyweds book direct flights from Brussels to Cancun, but Mexico has about 30 other airports. With a stopover, for example, you fly to Mexico City in about 15 hours. Slightly longer it takes to fly to Cozumel, Mérida, Acapulco or Guadelajara with one or two stopovers.
Best travel time for your honeymoon to Mexico
On honeymoon, you might prefer to go to the south with its downright tropical climate. Couples often honeymoon on the Yucatán peninsula, with the best time to travel being between December and April. This is because during summer it can get quite hot there, up to above 30 degrees, and then you might hit a hurricane or heavy rains. Even when temperatures drop in January, it still averages 26 degrees, making for the perfect climate.
TIP: avoid the traditional holiday periods, as this is when prices rise significantly everywhere. Indeed, around Christmas, New Year and Easter, tourists from all over the world like to seek out the Mexican sun.
Benefits of a honeymoon to Mexico
- A honeymoon to Mexico makes you forget all about your home country. You will be absorbed into a world with totally different vibes, smells and colours and live along to the rhythm of upbeat Mexican music.
- With the fantastic world heritage temples and pyramids of the Mayas and Aztecs, you can cross a wonder of the world off your bucket list.
- Want peace, sun and sea? The entire Yucatán peninsula is at your feet.
- During your honeymoon in Mexico, you will enjoy the refined and exotic Mexican cuisine. Taste lavishly of Mexican specialities such as tacos, tortillas, enchiladas and nachos.
Take note!
Just so you know...
- In different areas, it's best to be wary. Find out carefully where danger codes orange and red apply for crime and remember that many regions fall under the colour code yellow.
- Avoid the area around the Popocatépetl and Colima volcanoes. In fact, the authorities here prohibit entry within a 5km radius because of high crime rates.
- Provide both Mexican Pesos (MXN) and US Dollars. You will need dollars for the more official payments, such as those for museums and all kinds of accommodation. Pesos are best to have with you when you go into town, visit small restaurants and shops or use a taxi. Book your pesos here in Belgium or check exchange rates near your accommodation before you leave. Order larger amounts you withdraw well in advance in Belgium.
- ATMs, especially the single ones, are not safe everywhere in Mexico. Scamming remains possible, and commission fees are also variable. Don't withdraw money on a busy street - rather step into an official bank and do your transaction there. Take a VISA or internationally known Mastercard with you.
- Beware of the highway police! If they ask you to pay your fine immediately in pesos, tell them you want to call the tourist police first. In fact, this is usually a scam.
