Vena amoris
It is fair to say that most Belgians do wear their wedding rings on their left hand. This custom goes back to a centuries-old tradition. If we delve into history, we learn that people used to think that the ring finger of the left hand had a direct blood connection with the heart. This so-called love vein is called the vena amoris. Because of this, wearing a wedding ring on the ring finger of the left hand was seen as the symbol of love. But worldwide, the choice of hand differed quite a bit.
Religion and culture
There is no universal answer to the question of exactly which hand the wedding ring ring belongs on. After all, the choice depends on several factors. Religion and culture play an important role. Catholics, for example, wear their wedding ring on the left hand because it is closer to the heart. Muslims prefer the right hand, as do Protestants. Persons belonging to the Jewish community get the wedding ring slipped on the right hand during the wedding ceremony, but afterwards it is shifted to the left hand by the bride.

Furthermore, the choice also depends on where you live, your profession and your own feelings. What is your dominant hand? In some countries, such as Italy, Spain and the Netherlands, the wedding ring ring should traditionally be worn on the left hand, while in some others, such as Austria and Germany, it is the custom to prefer the right hand. In Flanders, it even depends on the province where you live! Of course, wearing your wedding ring should also be practical. So people often choose their non-dominant hand to wear their wedding ring on. This way, the ring does not interfere with writing or exercising your profession and is not easily damaged.

A wedding ring is the symbol of your eternal relationship and the unique love between you and your partner. The meaning you give it does not depend on which hand you choose in the end.
