Fasci-what?
Fascinators are hair accessories that usually consist of a pin or cap decorated with feathers, flowers, or rhinestones. They are slightly smaller than hats and are secured to the side of your head with invisible pins or a comb. The versions with a short veil or net are—funny enough—called birdcages.
The trend: super romantic and very vintage
Vintage-look dresses, retro hairstyles, and accessories are totally on trend. Are you also a fan of the glamour of movie stars like Rita Hayworth and Audrey Hepburn? Then a stylish fascinator will complete your look. Of course, you can also combine fascinators with a modern romantic outfit, because they come in all possible designs.
Five tips: how to wear a fascinator
Updo hairstyle: fascinators with large flowers or feathers look best with a bridal hairstyle with volume. Putting your hair up keeps the whole look balanced. What's more, it's better to keep the hair around your face simple when wearing a fascinator, so it doesn't look too busy.
Place it at an angle: it's best to place a fascinator slightly diagonally on the side of your head. A fascinator with a short veil is especially flattering when it falls just above or over one eye.
Subtle match: a fascinator can be extravagant, as long as it doesn't draw all the attention to itself. So make sure it matches your outfit. Repeat certain elements of your dress—stones, color details, a piece of lace—in your hairpiece to create unity.
With or without a veil: do you love romantic veils but find them less practical on the dance floor? After the wedding ceremony, swap your long veil for a fascinator or go for a birdcage veil, which you can remove for the evening party.
Be careful with photos: larger fascinators or those with a veil can sometimes cast a strange shadow over your face. So make sure you have photos taken from different angles so that your face is clearly visible.
Discuss with your hairdresser in advance how he or she can best integrate your fascinator into your hairstyle. During your hairstyle trial, try out how and where your hairdresser can best attach the fascinator and how easy it is to remove it afterwards. Ask your mother or maid of honor to accompany you to your trial so that she can help you on your wedding day!
