1. Make sure your lips are in top condition
To achieve the perfect red lips, make sure your lips are in top condition. Exfoliate them gently with M.A.C. lip scrub and remove any small flakes with a cotton swab. Then moisturize your lips with a nourishing lip balm.
2. Choose the right shade of red
Make sure your shade of red matches your skin and the color of your teeth. Some shades of red will make your teeth look yellower, which you obviously want to avoid. If you have very fair skin, it's best to choose a red with a blue undertone. If your skin tone is warm and medium, you can opt for a brighter color, possibly with an orange undertone. If you have dark skin, berry red and plum are great options!
3. Keep your lip liner handy
Red lipstick tends to ‘bleed’ into the lines around the mouth after a while. Therefore, first outline your lips with a lip liner in the same color as your lipstick and then fill in your lips completely with the lip liner. This will prevent your lipstick from bleeding and will also make it last longer.
4. Precision thanks to your lip brush
Use a lip brush to achieve precise coloring of your mouth. If you apply the lipstick directly from the tube, you risk coloring outside the lines!
5. Bite
Bite your lipstick on a tissue to set the first layer of lipstick.
6. Work in layers
Apply a second layer of lipstick to intensify the color. Red lipstick tends to fade, so make sure you have your lipstick with you all day!
7. Keep the rest of your makeup neutral
If you choose red lips, you should keep the rest of your makeup neutral. The combination of red lips and heavy eye makeup is rather harsh and over the top. Opt for a soft eye look!
TIP: When looking for a red lipstick, don't test it on your palm, but on your lips. That's the only way to see if the chosen color suits you!
