Choosing the perfect bridal hairstyle
As a hair & makeup artist, Karine from Hair & More by Karine Uvijn enjoys helping her brides choose the right hairstyle for their hair length and type. Karine: “My first question always gauges what type you are: are you classic, do you prefer sleek or feminine hair, ... A mood board of what you like is handy for me, and I like to know what your wedding dress looks like. Then I see what's possible with your hair type and length, and suggest several options. If you have an example photo with a completely different hair type, that specific look might not work - unless we put in an extra ‘effort’ and, for instance, add hair extensions_.”_

Bridal hairstyles for your hair length and type
Karine discusses her ideal bridal hairstyles for your hair length and type:
Bridal hairstyles for short hair: “With short hair, you have fewer options. Depending on how short your hair is, you might not be able to style it up or curl it easily. However, you can enhance the hairstyle with decorative pins.”
Bridal hairstyles for medium-length hair: “With medium-length hair, you can do whatever you like! Style it up, leave it down, curl it... I'll look at how you usually wear your hair and how you want to appear, what you and/or your future partner find attractive, your type of wedding dress, whether or not you'll wear a veil, ...”
Bridal hairstyles for long hair: “With long hair, you can fully choose your bridal hairstyle. If you have a wedding dress with a very open back, I think it's beautiful for the hair to fall mid-back so you can still see the dress's cutout. Of course, choosing a half or fully styled-up bridal hairstyle for such a design is also stunning. If the wedding dress is more closed, I would suggest styling the hair up.”
Bridal hairstyle for thin or fine hair: “I would definitely propose styling thin or fine hair up for a great hairstyle. The style of the bridal hairstyle can vary, but it will usually be quite ‘casual’ or loosely styled. I also find this the most beautiful; an updo with a loose boho twist.”
Bridal hairstyles for thick hair: _“A lot of or thick hair can sometimes be heavy to style into an updo. Or if you leave it down and curl it, the curls might flatten more quickly. A possible solution is trimming the hair a bit. A full ponytail or thick braid works well with this hair type.”

Karine’s toolbox
Would you prefer a different look than your own hair allows? Karine will definitely find the right solution: “I also have a salon where I can adjust the color or length of your hairstyle. I also love placing extensions - permanent or just for the wedding day. A beautiful color and some extra volume often make for a prettier updo. Even for a loose hairstyle, it's beneficial to add more hair - to create more curls, for example. The false hair helps hold the natural hair, keeping curls longer. I have a whole toolbox...” she smiles._
The importance of a trial hairstyle and makeup
- Hair & More by Karine Uvijn’s approach to a trial hairstyle and makeup goes like this: “We meet in my salon, where I have everything available. I invest quite some time in a trial hairstyle and makeup, so I'm perfectly prepared on the wedding day and everything goes smoothly. I see this as a dialogue, where I gladly involve the bride in the decision: “Do you like it this way, would you like something different?” We work together for a beautiful outcome where the bride feels truly good. She knows she can trust me, and that on her wedding day, everything will be perfect!”
“An advantage of a trial makeup session: I get to see your skin, and can provide personalized recommendations. Tips might include spray tanning, eyebrow shaping, or eyelash enhancements to make your eyes bigger and more expressive”, says Karine.

Karine: “I recommend washing your hair the day before, and beforehand, I give tips for proper hair care. After washing, avoid using styling tools like straighteners, and let it be as natural as possible. Or visit me the day before for a brush, so the right preparation is already there. For makeup, I suggest exfoliating the skin and lips two days in advance, and cleansing the skin well on the morning of the wedding, applying a good day cream.”_

Karine from Hair & More by Karine Uvijn shares what she believes are the hairstyle trends for weddings this year: “‘Glam waves’ are making a strong comeback recently - a typical look from the 1950s, where the hair is styled behind one ear. This trendy hairstyle is my favorite too! Beautiful high ponytails are also very in and trendy right now.”
Regarding 2023 trends in bridal makeup, Karine states: “In terms of makeup, the 1950s style is also returning - a very feminine look, with plenty of eyeliner. Additionally, the makeup is very soft to enhance the natural ‘glow.’ The natural look is the makeup trend for this year - beautiful, glowing, and natural, enhancing the eyes perfectly. As a bride, you'll truly shine - delightful! This trend will continue next year too: in 2024, we'll see a real ‘back to nature’ style.”
