1. Measure the ring size yourself
If your partner shouldn't know you're looking for the perfect engagement ring, you'll have to measure the ring size yourself.
Either take one of your partner's rings, best one he or she wears on the ring finger, and place it on a ruler to measure the diameter of the inside. Beware: many rings become oval-shaped when worn often. If necessary, then draw the inside of the ring with a pencil, and show your drawing with the outline to your jeweller. However, this method only works with a ring that you can lay nice and flat.
Alternatively, look for a paper or synthetic ring gauge, which you can secretly fit around his or her finger while he or she sleeps... You ‘ve got this!
2. Take a (different) ring with you
Even easier if possible: take one of your partner's rings to the jeweller or jewellery designer(s), and have it measured by the jeweller. For this, choose a ring that you know will fit your partner nicely, and wear on the ring finger. Tip: during the weeks before you go shopping, note the rings your partner wears on the right finger and take the suitable ring with you to the shop. Bet you'll get your hands on the right size engagement ring?
3. Let your partner try on
If it doesn't need to be a surprise that you are looking for an engagement ring, just take your partner to the shop with you. Let him or her try on until you get the right size engagement ring, and let your eye glance over some designs right away. Do you want to surprise him or her? Then let him or her point you in a certain direction, without pinning you down to one specific ring. A ring with the perfect size will not slide off your finger, but leave some slack in case it swells a bit. With this method, you are always sure to get the right size engagement ring.
Better too big than too small
After reading the above tips, do you still doubt whether you have the right ring size? To be on the safe side, choose a ring that is slightly larger. A jeweller can easily make a ring smaller than larger.
Good luck with your search!
