The couple’s enthusiasm determines everything
For DJ Oliver Alex, one thing is certain: the party is all about the couple. “They are the center of attention. If they’re on the dance floor and excited, they automatically draw their guests in. People mirror that and naturally join in, with the right atmosphere. You can take this literally: if a couple goes outside to stand by a fire bowl, their guests follow. If they’re on the dance floor, everyone joins them there.”
Oliver feels that energy every single time. “You can have exactly the same group of people and the same music, and still get a completely different vibe purely because of the couple’s presence. For me, a dance party isn’t an add-on—it’s the heart of the evening celebration. After the more formal parts such as the ceremony, reception, and dinner, that’s the moment when everyone can be themselves and celebrate exuberantly together. That’s why I prefer working with couples who genuinely enjoy dancing. I want to create a dance party with them that truly matters to them. With that energy, we can really make the difference and create a memorable celebration together.”

The first dance sets the tone
According to Oliver, you can set the tone for a successful dance party right away with the first dance. He saw a great example of this with Claire and Ben: “They started with a classic slow song, but that was intentionally misleading. Together, we had prepared a mix in advance. Suddenly the track switched into a powerful salsa: ‘La Vida es un Carnaval’, which the couple danced to with a rehearsed salsa routine. The energy of the spectators immediately shot up. On top of that, at the end of their first dance they switched once more—this time to Jason Derulo’s ‘Wiggle’. From that moment on, the entire dance floor was packed; the party really kicked off with a bang.”

Tips for a packed dance floor
To support couples, Oliver Alex always schedules a few preparatory conversations and shares practical tips: “One week before the wedding, we go through everything together once more. I give concrete advice such as: stay near the dance floor, even if you don’t love dancing. If you’re chatting at the edge of the dance floor, you’re still showing your presence and helping maintain the vibe_. Put a photobooth on the dance floor rather than in the hallway, so you don’t draw guests away from the dance floor. Same goes for a potential_ midnight snack: have it served on the dance floor. Finally, avoid speeches or games during the dance party. Anything that interrupts the dancing flow will make your guests’ energy drop.”

How to get all guests involved
Of course, the right music selection also helps involve everyone in the party. Oliver explains: “One of the most important things here is enough variety. I play sets of three to four songs that fit together, so people get ten to fifteen minutes to get into a vibe_. That can be salsa, rock ’n’ roll, or 90s house. After a few tracks I switch to a different_ vibe_, so no one drops off. If you stay in the same genre for too long, people leave the dance floor. If you vary well, everyone stays engaged.”_

Requests & vinyl as a connecting factor
Another way to get guests involved is through requests. Oliver elaborates: “I always receive requests with a smile. Of course, not everything can be played, but I do make sure it feels welcome. As encouragement, I bring a crate of vinyl records with classics from the 70s, 80s, and 90s—from ‘Pump Up the Jam’ to ‘Paradise by the Dashboard Light’. Those records create connection: younger guests get entertainment, older guests get a touch of nostalgia. That way, everyone has a reason to head to the dance floor.”
Lastly, Oliver shares how he creates even more engagement: “I set up my DJ booth right next to the dance floor, because that way I’m truly part of the dance floor and easy to approach. That also makes it easy for me during the party to check in on the couple’s vibe and wishes, and the threshold is very low to align briefly together.”
