What is a boutonnière?
A boutonnière is a flower that you wear in the left lapel of the suit jacket, with the stem pointing downwards. Very symbolic: the flower sits so close to the groom's heart. Thanks to the festive look of a boutonniere, it completely finishes off the groom's outfit.
Traditionally, flowers from the bride's bridal bouquet are carried through to her bridesmaids' corsages. The boutonniere is the male counterpart of this tradition and is thus worn by the groom and his entourage. To differentiate between the male suite guests and the groom, the groom's boutonnière is often slightly larger or bulkier.
What flowers do you choose for a boutonniere?
When opting for a boutonniere at your wedding, it is important to choose a flower that is not too big or heavy, and will survive your entire wedding day. Your professional florist will undoubtedly help you make the best choice!
Our House of Weddings florists - the specialists in the field - have already given some tips on which flowers are best to choose for a boutonniere so that it will survive your entire wedding day:
Flowers with a woody stem: Choose flowers with a woody stem, which can go a long time without water. Think roses, craspias, chrysanthemums and wax flowers.
Dry flowers: Some florists prefer dried flowers, while Diederik of VIVA Blooming prefers a combination: "I like to work with a combination of dried flowers and flowers that you can easily dry later yourself. This is how I think you get the most beautiful colour palette."
Orchid Vanda: Want to go for a modern boutonniere? Then you can opt for the ‘orchid vanda’. This is a very strong flower variety that you will come across in both colourful and sober colours. This flower can go a week without water, and you can stick it on a wood disc and attach it with a magnet for a fun boutonniere.
Rose or ranunculus: Do you still prefer a more classic boutonniere? Then rose or ranunculus is ideal - these are also very strong flowers! For roses with stronger leaves that last longer, we recommend roses from warmer countries. Choose not too large buds, but rather a smaller rose or a spray rose. You can attach this with a safety pin and it will last long even on a hot day.
Which style boutonniere will you go for?
Besides the flower you choose, you can personalise your boutonniere in many other ways. For instance, you can ask your florist to add a ribbon or plume in the colour of your theme. Increasingly, the boutonniere is being turned into a real statement piece . Because he's worth it!
