How to Personalize Your Wedding Ring: From Material to Engraving

You wear your wedding rings every day. That’s why choosing them is about more than finding a beautiful design. The colour, material, finish and engraving all shape how personal your rings feel. Jeweller Koen from DE BRUYLOFT explains how couples can make thoughtful choices, from the materials to digital visualisation and a meaningful engraving.

1. Understand all the options and materials

The materials you choose help determine the look and budget of your wedding rings. “The price of gold has risen sharply, so couples are paying more today than they were six months ago,” says Koen. “On the other hand, we’re seeing warm gold tones become more popular than white gold again. There are also more options than many couples realise: you can choose 22-, 18-, 14- or 9-carat gold. And for those who want a lighter colour, there’s platinum, for example, which is often more budget-friendly than gold today.”

Making the right choice starts with accurate information. Koen explains: “Couples often have preconceptions about certain metals without really knowing what they mean. There’s lots of information online, but it isn’t always complete or correct. In our showrooms, we show you how the metals are made, explain their advantages and disadvantages, and outline how they affect your budget, so you can make an informed choice.”

We also make this information tangible. “We have a book that clearly explains everything, as well as a box containing samples of all the metals that you can try on your skin. The way a metal looks against your skin makes a big difference. Someone with a lot of red in their skin tone, for example, may find that yellow gold doesn’t suit them as well. You only see that when you actually try it on.”

2. Visualise your rings with the help of the configurator

Certain digital tools help you see the possibilities and make a choice that’s right for you, Koen advises: “Our configurator shows you how a design changes when you make certain choices. You can immediately see the effect of a different width or finish.”

However, the physical experience remains decisive. “It can be difficult to judge for yourself what a difference of half a millimetre makes. Sometimes we show several rings at once to help you visualise it. When couples then see the options in our configurator, they get a very clear picture of the final result.”

3. Make it personal with an engraving

The classic engraving remains popular, Koen says: “Many couples still choose to have both their names and wedding date engraved, with their partner’s name first.”

At the same time, many couples are looking for more personal and creative engravings. Koen says: “We’ve engraved opening lines, children’s handwriting, little symbols and even humorous designs. Recently, a couple had their love story turned into emojis, which we engraved on their rings. There are plenty of possibilities, as long as there’s enough room on the ring for the engraving to be clearly visible.”
