The power of documentary photography
You scroll through Pinterest and Instagram, discovering a world of perfectly styled images and poses. That editorial style is often beautiful and polished down to the last detail. At the same time, many couples are looking for something that feels closer to their own story. Documentary photography is a wonderful way to capture that, with an honest and spontaneous approach that shows what really happens.

According to Daphne Matthys , the strength of this natural style lies in its authenticity: “Glances, little gestures, stolen moments_, unexpected emotions, friends laughing, a hand being held for a moment – these are the moments that truly make a wedding day. Instead of directing or staging them, I observe and capture the story as it unfolds naturally.”_
Documentary photography shows not only what your day looked like, but above all how it felt.

Memories with soul
For Daphne, it is the humanity of documentary photography that makes it so special. As a photographer, she gets to bear honest witness to all the emotions of your wedding day, without curating any moments. “What has always drawn me to documentary photography is its raw authenticity,” she says. “I want to feel everything. I want to see how you interact with each other. I want to capture that glance, without having to interrupt anyone. Believe me, once I have my camera in hand, I put on my invisible cape.”

By staying in the background, she creates space for genuine moments. “The look on a parent’s face when they see their child in their wedding outfit for the first time, an unexpected tear while getting ready, those heartfelt hugs between friends who haven’t seen each other in a long time... When you learn to watch, wait and feel as a photographer, you create images that go far beyond a pretty picture. They become memories with soul.”

Room to be yourselves
Choosing a documentary photographer also changes how your wedding day feels in practice. You have the freedom to truly experience your day without having to pose deliberately. Your guests can be completely themselves, too. The relaxed atmosphere of documentary photography means no one has to worry about how they look in the photos.
That does not mean less work for the photographer. Daphne explains: “I move with the rhythm of the day, observe and anticipate the moments that will unfold naturally. Nothing is quite as it seems. Rather than positioning people or giving them poses, I look for light, composition and emotion all day long.”

That does not mean there is no guidance at all. For moments such as a love shoot, your documentary photographer will help you along, always focusing on comfort and connection.

Stolen moments
The most valuable images in documentary photography often arise unexpectedly: they are the moments you cannot plan. According to Daphne, these ‘stolen moments’ are the ones couples look back on years later and say: this is how it really felt.
“Think of the quiet nerves while getting ready, parents who are completely overcome with emotion, spontaneous hugs, the energy of the party, and so on. Small, almost invisible moments that matter so much, and that have room to unfold: holding each other’s hand, exchanging glances, ...”

(Re)live your wedding day as it really was
After their wedding day, many couples have a clear sense of what it was like to work with their documentary photographer: they could trust them. They did not have to worry about photos or poses, which meant they could be fully present with their friends and family, and most importantly, with each other.

Daphne adds: “When they look at their photos later, they often discover moments they didn’t even see on the day itself. I capture those, too, one by one. What couples appreciate most is that the photos are not only beautiful, but true to life. They can feel the atmosphere, emotions and energy of their day all over again.”
And that, Daphne says, is ultimately what documentary wedding photography is all about: “Not only showing what it looked like, but above all, showing how it felt to be there,” she concludes.
