1. Start your search in good time. For many couples, booking a wedding photographer is one of the first steps in their wedding planning. Book your professional wedding photographer at least six months in advance.
2. Set your budget. Based on your must-haves, work out how much you want to spend on wedding photography. If your wedding photos are high on your list of priorities, you might opt for a highly experienced wedding photographer. A perfect choice, but one that naturally comes with a price tag!
3. Decide which style appeals to you. Think in advance about the style of wedding photography that appeals to you, from photojournalism to a sophisticated fine art look. Browse the portfolios of various wedding photographers before getting in touch. If a style immediately appeals to you, then you’ll know you’ve found the right one.
4. Arrange an introductory meeting and discuss your mood board and schedule for the day. Make sure you meet the photographer before accepting a quote. This will help you gauge whether the wedding photographer is a good fit for you, and you can go through your mood board and the schedule for your wedding day straight away: from getting ready to the first dance. The better your photographer understands your timing and wishes, the smoother everything will run.
5. Ask about a pre-wedding shoot. Many wedding photographers offer an engagement or pre-wedding shoot. This allows you to get to know each other before the wedding day, get used to the camera, and know exactly what to expect from your photographer.
Your wedding photographer will follow the flow of your wedding day and capture both the big and the small moments. These are the classic highlights of a wedding photo report:
Discuss in advance with your wedding photographer which moments are most important to you, so that they can capture everything.
On average, a wedding photographer will be present for 6 to 12 hours on your wedding day, depending on the package you’ve chosen. If you opt for a shorter package, your wedding photographer will capture a selection of key moments, such as your civil ceremony, the wedding ceremony and the reception. If you’d like the whole day documented, your wedding photographer will follow you from the morning until after the first dance. If the photographer is present all day, please also provide lunch, an afternoon snack and dinner for them.
Choose a wedding photographer whose style appeals to you straight away. Every wedding photographer has their own signature style: some document your day in a photojournalistic manner, whilst others prefer natural light and a softer, fine-art reportage style. Take a look at the wedding photographer’s portfolio in advance, so you know exactly what style your wedding photos will be edited in and delivered in.
Whether you choose one or two wedding photographers is a personal choice. Two wedding photographers capture more footage from different angles, ensuring you don’t miss a single emotion. For example, the second photographer might capture your partner’s arrival, whilst the first stays with you. Make clear arrangements in advance about what you expect.
A pre-wedding shoot or engagement shoot is a photo shoot that takes place before your wedding day, often a few weeks or months in advance. It gives you the chance to get to know your wedding photographer, get used to being in front of the camera, and get some photos that you can use, for example, for your ‘save the date’ cards. Many couples find it a relaxed way to prepare for the photo shoot on the big day itself.
That depends on the package. Some wedding photographers only provide the digital wedding photos, whilst others also offer a wedding album, prints and extra photo books (for your parents or grandparents, for example). Check in advance what’s included and which products you can order later on, so that you can hold your most beautiful photos in your hands.
A professional wedding photographer captures your most important moments and turns them into lasting memories. A talented wedding photographer captures precisely those emotions and details that would otherwise be lost. This way, you can be sure that your wedding photos will be of high quality – images you’ll still enjoy looking back on years later.
There are various styles of wedding photography. These are the most common:
There are also other creative styles of wedding photography, depending on your preferences and the wedding photographer’s specialism. Each style has its own distinctive features. Explore the styles in various portfolios and discuss them with the wedding photographers you’re considering, so you can find the wedding photography style that suits you best.
On average, you can expect to pay between 2,000 and 3,500 euros for a Belgian wedding photographer, according to our National Wedding Survey; comprehensive packages can cost over 5,000 euros.
